Why Plaid?  Timeless, cozy, versatile, can stay up all winter

Tablecloth– A plaid blanket with colors of cream, green, red and black works as a tablecloth in our dining room.

Dishes– A few pieces go a long way to set the table in plaid.

Homemade paper chains and stars- Super simple to put together, this inexpensive craft adds an elegant twist to traditional paper chains and stars.

Ribbon– Displayed around the house, ribbon makes a dramatic statement.

Pillows/Blankets– Nothing speaks of cozy and comfort like plaid wrapped around you.

Ornaments– Bought or homemade, plaid ornaments add a special touch to the tree.

Cards/Books/Wrapping Paper– Inexpensive and fun way to add the prettiness of plaid with minimal investment.

The classic, cozy appeal of plaid patterns is timeless.  The traditional colors of red, green and gold evoke a nostalgic feel of warmth and comfort. As I leaned into this theme, I found myself wondering why plaid feels so quintessentially Christmas…

Recently, while reading about the history of plaid at Christmas, I came upon a link between the colors in plaid and the Nativity Story.   Evidently, red stands for myrrh, green for frankincense and gold for kinship.  I had no idea that these colors pointed to Biblical gifts presented to Jesus.

The Blanket That Started It All

Last year, I spotted this blanket on the discount rack of a small gift shop and I couldn’t resist.  The classic colors of cream, red, green, and black plaid cloth spoke to me!  I knew that cold January day that Christmas 2025 was going to incorporate plaid in it.  The hard part was waiting the 11 months. Instead of using it as a blanket, I have opted to drape it over our dining table.  I love the rustic but classic look it brings to the room.

Plaid Tableware on a Budget

Early October I spotted these small casual plaid plates and bowls in the Magnolia section of Target. Paired with dinner plates I already have, I knew they would complement the tablescape I was envisioning.  I love the durable everyday design, which I’m sure we will enjoy for many years.

Easy DIY: Paper Chains and Stars

Desiring to sprinkle touches of plaid throughout our home, without spending a lot of money, led me to make some paper chains and stars to fill up our space.  I purchased several sheets of decorative plaid paper from Hobby Lobby while it was 40 percent off and went to work creating. It is called Christmas Plaid. These stars and chains couldn’t be simpler to make and add a nice festive touch.

The Magic of Ribbon

Next, I purchased a spool of plaid ribbon from Hobby Lobby with the red, green and gold colors.  For $5 it swirls around our dining room tree, a wooden box, picture frames, tied around candlesticks, made into wreath bows and topped on pretty packages.  One spool of ribbon can be used in many different ways.

Pretty Plaid Wrapping Paper

Another way to inexpensively add the plaid touch is through wrapping paper.  I like to display decorative Christmas paper in a barrel that sits by our tree each year.  Pretty plaid packages under the tree create continuity.  Similarly, wrapping old books with a simple ribbon draped around them works to extend the look to other spaces nearby.

Ornaments With A Personal Touch

Last, I decoupaged the same Christmas plaid paper onto some cardboard cutouts from Hobby Lobby.  I glued on some extra fine gold glitter and tied decorative ribbon around them.  These simple DIY ornaments are very inexpensive and easy to put together.

Bringing It All Together

It all started with a discounted plaid blanket purchased after Christmas last year.  I began dreaming of a pretty plaid Christmas 12 months away.  Time seems to go so fast and before I knew it, it was time to put my thoughts into action.  Thankfully, with a few simple, inexpensive touches I was able to create this nostalgic look without having to go out and buy a lot of new stuff.  What about you?  Do you like to work around themes for Christmas too?  If so, what are your favorites?
