Cheery! Warm! Bright! These are just a few descriptions that come to my mind when I think of the sunflowers that grace my garden this time of year. I look forward to the towering green stalks bursting with yellow petals every August.
What sunflowers signify to me
These impressive bold blooms signify several things to me. For instance, the bright yellow petals remind me of the warmth of late summer. They appear as the days are getting slightly shorter and fall classes are just around the corner. A gentle reminder to get outside and relish every moment. The vibrant yellow color exudes happiness and cheerfulness, adding a beautiful pop of color.
why sunflowers work so well
Sunflowers work very well in late summer decorating. When August begins, the patriotic beach decor displayed for the last two months comes down. Since I’m not ready to pull out the pumpkins and gourds just yet I add in sunflowers throughout our home as the first layering piece.

Adding in these pretty blossoms throughout our home is an easy way to bring in extra cheer. Placing faux flowers in baskets, buckets, and boxes is an easy way to display them. I have them on our back porch, kitchen shelves, dining room table and on our mantle. A towel and hot pad round out the look. As the flowers bloom outside in our garden I enjoy displaying them in a pretty pitcher on our counter.
gradual easing into autumn
As much as I love the autumn season I definitely like to ease into it. Our summers are way too short in Northern Minnesota and I don’t look forward to the cool, crisp days that are fast approaching. First I take away the summer decor, then I add in the sunflowers. In early September, the pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and mums slowly emerge. It is fun to gradually add in elements. I also add dried hydrangeas, pinecones collected from the yard, dried leaves and cattails.
enjoying the season we're in
I enjoy all of the seasons and the beauty each provides. I find myself not wanting to rush into the next one, but to stay in the present. This same mindset transfers to how I’m trying to live my life right now as well. Rather than constantly looking to the future, what if I just live each day with gratitude and awe of the beauty and blessings before me on this day right where I am? It brings to mind the scripture, “This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” from Psalm 118:24. It is a beautiful way to go about the day.
