The Christmas Quilt

December 1, 2025 by Lorie

It all started with an innocent trip to our local JCPenney’s to purchase a second set of flannel sheets.  As is often the case, one thing led to another, and I ended up buying a new Christmas quilt to go with the flannel sheets.  I reasoned that the white, beige and red tones in the quilt would go perfectly with the well-worn red comforter that has been covering our bed for over a decade.  Similarly, the reindeer, doves, snowflakes, holly and trees were just too whimsical to resist.  It was on sale too!

There was just one issue!  When I brought it home it didn’t exactly blend well with the yellow walls in our bedroom.  I have wanted to repaint the walls for years, but it just never seemed like the right time…

A week later, on a lazy Saturday morning, I broached the subject with my husband and reluctantly asked him if he would like to paint the walls a more neutral color scheme to match the quilt.  I must have caught him at just the right time because he ended up priming the walls that very morning.  Soon after he was driving to town to pick up paint. We opted for white and beige accent wall. This is where it got very interesting…

As he was painting the walls he brought up a four-poster bed we had seen in an ad almost a year ago.  At the time, we had gone to the store to look at it, but they didn’t have it in the showroom.  We didn’t feel comfortable buying it without seeing it in person, so we walked away, basically forgetting about it.

My husband suggested we take a drive to that same store (Schneiderman’s) and check again.  On a whim we drove there, not at all expecting it would be there.  Surprisingly, it was prominently displayed in the showroom, and we both knew we were going home with it.

A few days later, as he was setting up the new bed, I was washing white curtains I had stored in the linen closet.  The curtains belonged to another poster bed we used to have.  Years ago, we upgraded from a queen mattress to a king.  Unfortunately, I settled on a cheaper headboard to get into a nicer mattress.

I never thought I’d have another four-poster bed until now.  It’s like coming full circle.  It’s similar to our other bed, but nicer!  It has been fun pulling out the curtains again, and garland and lights.

On the other side of the bedroom, I have decided to carry the white and red theme into our pencil tree and fireplace garland.  Many of the ornaments hanging on the branches are treasures collected over many years.  Red velvety bows are draped diagonally down the tree.

Recently, my husband said he screwed up by making the bedroom so cozy, I don’t want to leave it!  Admittedly, I do hang out in my bedroom a lot more these days.  It’s the only room in the house decorated for Christmas, as of yet, so I am soaking it in.

Truly, this whole bedroom refresh was the result of the Christmas quilt.  The quilt led to fresh wall paint which led to a new bed frame which led to a new color scheme for our usual Christmas bedroom decor.  What about you?  Do you ever find that one single item leads to a whole new project in your home?  If so, you are not alone!
